Guest Blog Post: Running For Fitness

No one looks sexy running; but damn if you don't feel it!
So I started running because my sister wanted a running partner for a 10k in San Fran.  I figured, "Ugh I don't run!  Why?!  Ugh, ok, I will do it!"  For my sister you know... and then a funny thing happened, I liked it.  No, no, I found a new drug!  Running can be so great for health; both mental and physical.  And magically I fell in love with it and as Forrest says, "For no particular reason I just kept on goin'."  So, Healthline wanted to do a guest post and I figured why not if the subject matter was of interest to me.  Running is, so for anyone who is thinking, not thinking or even uttered the word running.  Here is to you and I hope you can join in the good fun that is running.

Beginners Guide to Running for Fitness
Setting fitness goals is one of the most common new year’s resolutions around. Unfortunately for many, this desire to get in shape and turn over a new fitness leaf soon fizzles out in a week or two because of lack of planning and setting unrealistic goals. Some tend to choose fitness activities that require a lot of time and planning, while others choose those that don’t need a lot of preparation, such as running and jogging. Running is probably one of the best forms of exercise anyone can do; however, proper technique is important. Here are several running tips for beginners:
Plan your Schedule
Like any other exercise routine, setting a specific schedule for running is important. For beginners, most fitness experts recommend at least 30 minutes a day, three to five times a week. Running too far and too fast is the number one cause of injury among runners, so it is best to start easy, and increase the pace and distance gradually for a more positive result. Keeping a running journal or log is also a great way to track your progress. It also allows you to tune up your running routine if necessary.
Set a goal
Setting a goal is important when starting a fitness routine. It helps you to stay focused and motivates you throughout your exercise. Writing it down and posting it to an area where you can see it every day is also a good idea. Make sure that your goals are specific, attainable, measurable, timely and realistic to help you progress consistently, while avoiding the possibility of lapses. It is also recommended to categorize goals as short-term or long-term so that you are able to focus on one goal at a time. It also allows you to adjust physically and mentally to the changes brought by the new fitness program.
Clothing and Equipment
Running is an easy and cheap alternative to other exercise routines because it can be done almost everywhere, and requires very little equipment. A good pair of running shoes is the most important investment runners should make since this ensures the safety of the runner against injuries incurred with the use of improper shoes. It is best to purchase running shoes in specialty shops because they are more knowledgeable about what kind of shoe will complement your physique, goals, running style and ability. The late afternoon is the best time to shop for running shoes since feet swell slightly during the day.
Learn running techniques
Make sure you know all the basics before starting a running program. It is important to consult your physician to know your health limitations, especially for men 45 years and older or women who are 50 years and older. Start each run with a warm-up for at least 5 minutes. This can include quick walking, knee lifts and climbing stairs. Start running slowly with walking intervals to avoid straining. As time goes by, you can increase your pace and running time up to a speed and duration you’re comfortable with. Give yourself a few minutes to cool down after each run by walking and gently stretching your legs afterwards. It is best to run at least twice a week, consistently every week. Make sure that even if you’re running, you’ll still be able to carry a conversation. Running at the right intensity will keep you from burning out too quickly.
Mix up your routine
Mixing up other exercises or activities and adding variations can keep your fitness regimen more interesting. Running the same route over and over again can be boring, so it’s best to try different routes as you progress. Trails in woods, hills and beaches are also great places to run, since they allow you to enjoy your surroundings even while working out. You can also add variation by doing other activities such as cycling and aerobics. Try to add at least 20 minutes of strength workout in your routine twice a week as well. This will help you to build muscle and bone density, which can protect you against injuries.
Track what you eat
Exercise is not the only solution when trying to lose weight or keeping yourself healthy. Your eating habits play a big role in helping you achieve your fitness goals. Make sure to keep an eye on everything you eat. Try to avoid colas, candies and foods that are high in salt and sugar. Fruits and vegetables should comprise most of your diet since they contain fewer calories and significantly more nutrition.

A to Z Challenge: E is for Einbahnstraße

So as most of my followers know, I can't think straight when I have to pee.  I get lost, confused easily and often times get quite giddy (sometimes drunkeness coincides).  This challenge reminded me of the 2nd time in Germany that I lost my wits to the pee-pee dance monster.

Pics of the day wandering in Köln can be found here and here is an excerpt of that post:

"We got to walk through this really peaceful park when the wandering turned into hilarity.  My sister and I were heading out of the park when I noticed a street sign and mentioned we must have wandered closer to where we were staying.  I blame the urgency to use the wash closet, darkness approaching and beers.  But somehow I managed to confuse the name of the street the hostel was at Engelbertstraße, with the sign posted on the street that said Einbahnstraße.  I knew what the word said but my lazy brain was filling in the blanks, it started with E and ended in straße that had to be the street, right?  We just keep following that street in the direction of the hostel and we will be there, right?  No, not right.  Einbahnstraße basically means one way street.  We had a good laugh over my ridiculousness.  Let's just say the urge for urinating supersedes my keen sense of direction and comprehension skills."

We had been staying at the Meninger Hotel which is located on Engelbertstraße, I am sure you could see where my silly confusion came from, no?  I do highly recommend AGAINST the hostel we stayed at, it was not what I was looking for.  No, I am not picky but damn the bunk beds were half falling apart AND the shower stalls were dirty and pooled up to well above your ankles even if you were water savvy and turned the water off between soaping and rinsing.  No joke -_- all bad... And I won't take the, "You get what you pay for," bullshit because I could have paid less and slept in a church and quick washed in a WC for much cheaper.  Fuck you Meninger Hotel!

Foot in mouth disease, I have it.

"Because I am hard, you will not like me.  But the more you hate me, the more you will learn.  I am hard but I am fair." - Gunnery Sergeant Hartman

I looked back in my posts to see if I had written the story of how my father gave me away as an infant. But I couldn't find the story.  Suffice to say when I was a baby my father, who was kind enough to pass on his legacy of lunacy sprinkled evenly among his fine children, gave me away to my grandmother.  Story goes, my father threatened to steal me away to Mexico but my mom wouldn't have it.  And then the details are a little blurry.  My mother stayed with my father and agreed to give me up to live with my grandmother.  Something about a suicide threat from my father bla, bla, bla.  My grandmother's youngest child at the time was just about to graduate high school.  So she was young enough to take on a baby in the house.  With the help of my aunt and uncles I was raised in my grandmother's house.

In my about I talk about my gramps suffering from Michael J. Fox disease with a little extra dose of Alzheimer's.  My aunt ended up having to quit her job to help care for me and my grandfather whose health deteriorated at a rapid rate.  When my aunt stopped working she pretty much became my, "Sir! Yes, sir!" or as I affectionately called her, "Mommy-tia."  She was hard on me because I needed to learn.  She was hard on me because I was difficult.  She was hard on me because I had to grow up and function as a normal member of society.  Though now I thank her stern, rigid way of disciplining me.  I also know that some of my hang-ups and hiccups in personality probably stem from abandonment issues and authoritarian parenting by my guardian.  Pile some of that on top of some of the traits my dad left behind, which if diagnosed would land him in a category close to my own.  If not the same category I was diagnosed as when I was still too young and angry to make use of my therapy.

MAN-AIDS

I say may-oh-naze but the husband calls it man-aze which sounds like man-aids to me.  So forever when we run out of mayo... I laugh.  Then ask my husband why on Earth he would want "man aids", eeew!  It's a running joke in my house that will probably never get old.  We are both California-born and raised, where does the slight difference in our pronunciation come from?

Racist or something?

This is the second time in a month that something I see/read about is carried on through out several different mediums.  The last time this happened it was: kancho.  I had seen it done on a Korean drama I was watching.  I also saw a blog post about it.  But before that even happened I had mentioned kancho to a fellow blogger.  What was up with so much kancho suddenly?!  I dunno....  But I digress.

Blog Hop - My Neighborhood

For this blog hop I am going to share the sights I see most often where I live.  Nothing near downtown or anything.  I am hoping to get some pictures of Christmas decorations where I live soon.  Hopefully BEFORE Christmas; time is just flying by!  This hop was started by Kathryn and I am glad I get to play this time.

Heart attack in a can: REVISITED

I now interrupt your irregularly scheduled programing of, "Why is Susie lagging at blog posts? - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4." to bring you an important news flash:

Paying top dollar to be a corporate billboard.

Pilfered from GoComics
I was in search of a long-sleeve thermal or long-sleeve t-shirt the other day.  I had a hell of a time finding something that didn't have a brand name printed all over it and the high price tag attached to the brand name. I just wanted a simple, one-colored, neutral shirt. I finally settled on one. It was not quite what I wanted but I took it. You never know when a hood will come in handy right?

Smells like violence up in here!

Finish Him!
Let the weekend of violence begin!  Or rather end.  First it starts off with a mean spirited little girl shoving another little girl face first onto a hard wood floor.  The pusher did not even have a look of remorse in her eyes for hurting another little girl.  For NO REASON other than the little girl is mean.  The mean girls mom passed it off as the other little girl "fell".  Then later the confessions of how mean this little girl really is comes out.  The mean girl has a hard time playing nice with other kids.  She is also a biter!!!  Mom sweeping the bad behavior under the carpet is NOT going to fix the little girl's problems.  Don't even get me started on why I think that bad mommy is bad.  All I have to say, is I have my bad habits and in my assumption I am not going to screw up another life for my poor choices.  Some people don't stop to think about that when they decide to parent a child.  Like I have said there are good parents and then there are breeders.  More on that later!

Too bored or not too bored: that is the question

Eh it's cut a little short but you catch the drift.  I hope.

My take on Hamlet's speech has to do with the choice to either suffer or take arms.  This speech works well to those that 'suffer' boredom instead of taking charge.  They chose to 'be' bored instead of 'not (to) be' bored.  The question has been asked for ages.  To be or not to be?  Should I stay or should I go?  As Nike's slogan says, "Just do it!"  Or sit your ass down and shut the fuck up.  The world (ok well maybe it's just me) is tired of this:
"I'm bored."
"There's nothing to do in this town."
"I need a drink."
"I need something to do for [insert holiday]."
"I need a friend to go out with me."
"I am in the mood to go out and drink."
"I feel like doing something tonight."

More cannibalism?!

And I thought dubstep was a bad trend!!!  Ok, ok dubstep sucks and so does cannibalism.  What the hell is going on out there?!

Last week I was shocked about consenting cannibalism.  This week it gets better.  Or worse?  Worse.

He did what with his junk?!?!?!?!

He cut it off!
He had his penis and testicles surgically REMOVED.

Who the hell does that shit?
Mao Sugiyama did it.
And ya know what he did with his removed naughty bits?
Stop reading right here if you are easily grossed out.

He cooked his genitals and served them up for dinner for about $250 dollars a plate.

Driving in Germany

Have I studied up on it? Probably not as much as I should have.

However, I am very lucky that most of their road signs are symbols and easy to follow. Which brings me to something I never thought about having grown up in the US. Our road signs have TOO MANY words! It's no wonder foreigners get nagged for being shitty drivers.

I have the task of driving in a new place. So I probably will feel the same stress that I did when I first started driving at 12 (my mom felt the need to teach me early). But even at 12 I saw people drive, I pretty much had an idea of how it was done AND I could read the road signs because by 12 I was quite literate. I am VERY nervous. But I am a smart cookie and I adapt to change very well.

The Lorax

I went to watch The Lorax with my mom on Monday. My sister invited me to go with her and mom, but my sister ended up having to work. But I still took my mom to the movies to watch The Lorax. I live under a rock and had no idea The Lorax was even in theaters! Thanks Sylvia for the movie tickets and letting me have some nice quality time with mom.

Anyone who knows my mom or about my mom, knows she loves her garden. Those damn roses!!!! As a kid, she would have us go out and help pull weeds. I HATE(D) pulling weeds. I purposefully find apartments with little to no yard OR with a gardener included. Don't get me wrong I will be the first one to play in a pit of mud or a sand box but I hate pulling weeds. I also hate tending to plants. I do NOT have a green thumb. I kill things. But last year I was given a plant, a coleus to be precise. Well it's still alive but it looks terrible, I was unaware of how to trim it. So it looks like a very tall green stick with a few leaves at the top. I want to start over withit but I am afraid of killing it. This Christmas I was given a Cypress tree, it's still a sapling and alive. (I think my husband is to thank for keeping my plants alive.)

Usagi's Test Trip | MobilyTrip

Since I plan on traveling and not having my face buried in a computer while in Germany. I found a way to have my friends and family back at home keep tabs on what I am up to on my trip. I found MobilyTrip which is an app that uses GPS to track where I am and keep track of pictures I take on my iPhone during my trip. Then when I get to a place that has wifi, like the places I will be staying. I can upload my trip to Mobily from my phone. Once that is done, I can hop on the laptop and automatically have Mobily send a link to my blog for all to see.

So here is my first test of Mobily and it's functionality. Don't judge me, it's just a test.

Don't worry everyone, I will fully document my adventures when I return but for those who can't wait, I will send little tidbits of what I do daily using MobilyTrip.

During my trip to the grocery store to get goodies to bake some cookies for my husband I found this:
I am not normally a sucker for this kind of stuff, nor do I collect it. But I saw it and thought of my mother-in-law. She is into her garden and has rocks. So I thought she could maybe put this in her garden. I don't know how well it will hold up in the elements since it is painted. Maybe she can keep it inside by her plants. I don't know it just spoke to me and I had to buy it. I sort of feel guilty that I didn't buy my mom one. I will have to make up for it with something else I think.

My grocery store mission was a success and so were the cookies:
They were gingerbread cookies, I topped some with green sugar and the rest are plain. They were perfect for dunking in milk if you are into that sort of thing. Otherwise they were crispy perfection. I think the mister appreciated these after a long day of helping his sister move. Poor guy! I felt bad for him.

24 Days left till Germany!

How to solve modern pal problems

Sometimes I think Psychology Today is psychic... I was talking to a friend about friendships. How sometimes they come and go... sometimes you grow really close and suddenly never talk again. I know it has happened to me where a friend I once had is suddenly not as close or ever close again.

So I am posting this link for anyone who has felt that their friendships have died, grown apart, been interrupted for whatever reason.

This article has some common issues that come up between friends and how to tackle them in the right frame of mind.
